Acupuncture                                                                                       yin_yang.jpg

Acupuncture is a 5000 year old form of treatment considered part of eastern medicine.  The primary focus of acupuncture is to create balance in the body.

Western medicine, or biomedicine, is primarily concerned with specific diseases and their causes.  Diseases may affect various parts of the body, but are generally focused on a specific cause or area.  Eastern medicine uses an alternate view that considers the person in as a whole.  It takes the patient’s general constitution and symptoms, and then organizes the findings with descriptors to create an understandable configuration of disharmony.  Based on this information, the practitioner generates a unique treatment protocol tailored to bringing the pattern of disharmony into balance.

Acupuncture philosophy uses a concept of meridians as the method of diagnosis and treatment.  Meridians are named for organs and regions of the body and used as part of the descriptor system to better understand movement of energy or “chi” throughout the body.  Meridians may have decreased, increased, or blocked energy or “chi” at a point or points along the meridian.  Treatment is then geared to specific points to help create a balanced flow of energy throughout the meridians.

Acupuncture is traditionally treated with the use of needles.  While the needles vary in size, they are generally are very thin.  For this reason, the vast majority of people report that they don’t feel anything when the needle is inserted.  A few people sometimes state they feel a “mild pinch” upon insertion and then nothing once the needle was in.  Overall acupuncture is a relatively painless and relaxing experience.

Acupuncture has been recognized by the World Health Organization as an acceptable form of treatment for a wide variety of common and uncommon health complaints.  Acupuncture has been effectively used to treat many common conditions such as neck and back pain, radicular pains (sciatica, pinched nerves), general aches/pains, fatigue, high or low blood pressure, fertility, and many other conditions.
